Portrait de Denis Doistau

Career

Born in 1953, Denis Doistau graduated from École Camondo, a leading institution in the fields of design and interior architecture. He began his career as head of the design and development department at Atéma Paris, where he gained extensive experience in furniture design and interior planning.

In 1983, he founded his own furniture design and interior architecture agency. His approach, both rigorous and sensitive, was quickly recognized.

In 1985, he was awarded the first Grand Prix de la Critique du Meuble Contemporain for his table Chrysalide, praised for its sculptural, aesthetic, and functional qualities. This distinction was notably featured in Le Figaro, Le Point, and the specialized press.

Over several decades, Denis Doistau oversaw the renovation and transformation of high-end hotels, mainly in Paris. His work is distinguished by a constant search for balance between elegance, functionality, light, and the quality of materials.

His major projects include the Terrass’ Hôtel, Hôtel Madison, Hôtel Regents Garden, Hôtel Jardin de Cluny, Hôtel du Vieux Saule, Hôtel Relais Médicis, and the Central Hôtel.

In 2012, he received the Paris Shop & Design Award in the Hotels category for the complete redesign of Hôtel Madison in Paris.

Artistic Approach

After this long professional career, Denis Doistau now pursues his creative research through painting, in a more internal and introspective dimension. His approach is part of a spiritual, non-religious quest based on the conviction that human harmony comes through the appeasement of the ego and openness to an energy of peace, light and love, allowing us to welcome the Other in the full presence of the moment.

His painting is born of a constant dialogue between the outside world and her inner life. It explores the balance between matter and light, between reason and instinct, between the ordinary human being and the awakened being. Creation becomes a journey, a quest through which shapes, colours and textures translate the subtle movements of the soul.

His canvases bring together three complementary approaches. A thoughtful and structured style of painting, marked by straight lines, geometric shapes and sometimes collage, evokes the rational part of the being. A more instinctive and raw style of painting, born of matter and free movement, attentive to the present moment. Finally, a softer style of painting, made up of curves, pastel tones and light, symbolises the inner flame — that silent presence made up of peace and love.

Through these contrasts, Denis Doistau seeks to reveal the complexity of a being on a spiritual journey, torn between sometimes opposing forces but striving towards unity. Each canvas thus becomes a space for transformation and an invitation to let the light that each of us carries within us emerge and shine forth.
